A bedding set is a convenient way to coordinate several different bedding items without the need to look for separate pieces. They come in a nearly endless range of colors, patterns and materials, so there is bound to be something out there to suit anyone's taste.
One very important thing to keep in mind before shopping for one of these sets is that there is a difference between a bedding set and a bedroom set. A bedding set is stuff for your bed while a bedroom set is actual furniture such as nightstands, dressers and the bed itself.
Generally, there are a few different types of bedding sets. First are the bed sheet sets, which include flat sheets, fitted sheets and pillow cases. Second are the duvet sets, which include duvet covers and pillow cases. Third are the bedspread sets, which include bedspreads, base valences, pillow shams and special pillows. Some sets also include matching curtains and the most complete sets can have all of these items.
Several factors determine the price of these sets. The most obvious is the bed size; a set for a Twin bed will cost less than the same set for a King (although, the price of a cradle set often belies it size). Next is the material used to make the pieces; the more expensive the material, such as cotton versus silk, the more expensive the set. Then, there is the number of pieces in the set; sets with more pieces cost more than those of the same size and material. Patterned sets often cost more than solid colors and special weaves, such as jacquard are more expensive than simpler weaves.
The greatest advantage to purchasing a set is the convenience of getting several matching pieces that are grouped together. This simplifies both shopping and home decoration as it takes the guess work out of trying to make sure all of your pieces go together. After all, most people don't have the skill or training of interior decorators, but buying by the bedding set can help the average person attain the look of a well decorated room. One lesser known fact is that buying a bedding set is often more cost effective than buying the different pieces individually.
Sets also simplify matters for those with the desire to periodically change their bedding. For example, some people may want to change their bedding with each season; purchasing the set allows them to easily choose bedding that fit those seasons. For those that like their sheets to match the rest of their bedding, a set ensures that they get those perfectly matched sheets. Additionally, many people like their bedding to match the bedroom furniture; again, a set that includes curtains guarantees a match. On the other hand, a pre-assembled set does remove some of the creativity involved in hand matching pieces to create an attractive ensemble of bedding but, for most people, this is an acceptable trade off.
