Currently one of the most well-known sports in Malaysia, this high intensity racket game has a history that can be traced back to the early 19th century in England with the unlikely birthplace of a debtor’s prison, and its players consisting of prisoners of the Fleet Prison in London.
Similar to tennis, it involved rackets and balls, but while the game of tennis requires one to hit over the net, players were hitting the rubber ball against walls. Through a strange route, this game of rackets expanded into select English schools and progressed onwards into the game of squash as we know it.
Natural rubber was the material of choice for the ball while the rackets were made of laminated timber. In the 80’s, the racket construction shifted to lighter, carbon-based materials such as graphite. The strings which were made of natural gut were also replaced with synthetic strings. In Malaysia, this racket sport of two players battling it out in a four-walled court using a hollowed rubber ball can be traced back to the colonial days when it was introduced in the military camps and private clubs scattered around the country by the British Armed Forces.
From the time when the game was enjoyed by the Armed Forces Officers, the British Civil Service expatriates, planters, miners, and just a handful of locals, squash has since experienced a growth spurt of popularity in the last decade all over the world and especially amongst the locals in Malaysia mainly due to the incredible achievement of Malaysia’s very own Dato’ Nicol David, dubbed the ‘Queen of Squash’ when she became the first Malaysian to achieve the World No. 1 ranking in the women’s’ category in the year 2006 and has yet to relinquish her six year hold on that title even up until today.
With the increased popularity, famous tennis brands such as Wilson, Head, Dunlop, and Prince have taken up the task of manufacturing squash equipment, mainly squash rackets, squash balls, and squash strings. The advancement of technology has also led to the creation of lighter, swifter squash rackets without compromising durability due to the rackets’ core of carbon and graphite.
With popular brands such as Wilson and Dunlop, Lazada.com.my brings a selection of squash rackets that cater to the different needs and ability of squash players of any level.
