The effectiveness of a Y-strainer depends on the mesh filter. Mesh size is important because it determines the size of particles that passes the strainer. It refers to the number of openings in one linear inch of screen. A lower mesh number means smaller openings, and hence smaller particles that can pass through. As this valve traps debris, frequent cleaning is required. The strainer can be cleaned by shutting down the line and removing the strainer cap. As such, Y-strainers are usually installed near the drain plug for easy removal.
